Carmel Shabi (1939-2009) studied with British master silversmiths whose workshop dates back to late 18th century. While in England, Carmel created original work for world renowned companies such as Bvlgari, Asprey, Garrard and Tiffany, and also commissions by the Sheikh of Muskat and the Sultan of Malaysia. During the same period he also created the Ascot Cup for the Queen of England.
In the mid 1970's Carmel came back to Israel and focused on Jewish Ceremonial art. Within a few years he became an internationally recognized Judaica Artist, winning the prestigious Bar Ilan University Prize of Judaica. His impaccable techniques and innovative design vocabulary made his Tel Aviv based studio the Mecca of many designers and silversmiths and earned him a lifetime membership in the Swiss Guild of Silversmiths. In fact, he was its only non-Swiss member.
Carmel held exhibitions in Jerusalem, Illinois, New York, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington D.C. and Switzerland.
The timeless silver pieces Carmel created adorn the homes of “me’hadrei mitzva”, public figures and art collectors and are displayed in museums and art galleries around the world.
