Stefano Novo (1862-1927) - Dame in Venetië

Stefano Novo (1862-1927) - Dame in Venetië
Olio su pannello - Firmato a mano - 1902

Italian-born artist Stefano Novo (1862-1927) excelled at painting attractive Venetian beauties, either daydreaming, selling flowers or looking out over the city streets from their balcony.

He also painted views or 'vedute' of the city, such as St Mark's Square, the Rialto Bridge and the gondolas in the lagoon. This makes his work part of the so-called Venetian genre, which was especially popular in the 19th century due to the rise of tourism in Europe.

Novo was born in Cavarzere and studied at the Academy of Venice as a student of the genre painters Pompeo Molmenti and Eugène de Blaas. The material expression and light in the work are extraordinarily beautiful.

The painting was recently discovered in a private collection and then professionally cleaned and varnished.

The artwork was made in 1902 in Venice (bottom centre) and signed at the bottom left.
