José Van Gucht studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels from around 1929, among others with Rodolphe Strebelle. He won the internal prize "Jean Debrucq". He then continued his studies at the Higher Institute in Antwerp with Isidoor Opsomer and Pierre Paulus.
He lived and worked mainly in Veurne.
From ca. 1970 he had a gallery in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. In 1976, he moved to France for good.
Van Gucht worked in oil paint, watercolour, sepia and also made pen drawings. He had the ability to make a quick and accurate sketch with a few lines, which he then finished with coarse brush strokes. Many etchings and watercolours of him are kept in the print cabinet of the Royal Library in Brussels.
