Very fine inscribed buffalo rib bone segment from the Karo Batak in Sumatra.
The bone of a water buffalo is engraved with various magical motifs, texts and calendars. The local name is pagar.
Some motifs are still easily discernible.
On the concave side: an astrological scorpion, a traditional Batak calendar ( porholaan), a text and other Batak motifs.
On the convex side: a scorpion, a mythological animal, texts and other typical Batak motifs.
A twine is attached to it so that it could be hung on something.
These bones were used as amulets by a magic priest or datu. When a person didn't come back from his journey. The magic priest used the magical power of the amulet for protection of the missing person.
The amulet has been used and some images have a little worn off over time.
