Willem de Zwart was trained by Jacob Maris in the typical Dutch style of The Hague School and was quickly considered promising. However, after painting with the more impressionist artist George Hendrik Breitner in Drenthe in 1885, he changed his style. He opted for a looser brush handling, thick paint application and bright colours, with which he matched the work of the Amsterdam Impressionists.
