Marc Chagall was born on 7th July 1887 in Liozna, near Vitebsk in Belarus (then part of the Russian Empire), he became French in 1937 and died on 28th March 1985 in Saint-Paul de Vence.
Chagall is one of the most famous artists who settled in France in the 20th century, along with Pablo Picasso. His work, which does not belongs to any specific school, shows surrealist and neo-primitivist characteristics. Inspired by the Jewish tradition, the Shtetl life (Jewish village in Eastern Europe) and Russian folklore, he develops his own symbolism, inspired by his personal life. Chagall is a major artist whose work is collected and displayed worldwide.
