One of Van de Passe's finest Biblical prints with magnificent Clair-obscure effects.

A palatial interior with Belshazzar sitting beside his Queen under a canopy at a dining table with his noble guests and concubines; Belshazzar sits back in alarm and points at a vision of a disembodied hand and the words "MANE THEC PHARES" at upper right; on a table at right are gold and silver goblets taken from the temple in Jerusalem.

Inscription content: Lettered above with the title. Below centre "DANIEL V". In the margin one line "Balthasar Babyloniæ ... abutitur". Three columns of text, each two lines "Balsaar ... cadant". Below left "Martin de Voss inventor" and at right "Crispian van de Passe cælator excudit".

Condition: Very good dark impression of the only known state on laid paper with watermark (imperial eagle). Full sheet with wide margins. Some minor tears in lower margin, not affecting the image.

Reference: Hollstein Dutch 616.
