Mask in the Yup’ik style

Wood, pigments, vegetable fibres and fur.
65 x 46 x 29 cm (95 cm including the stand)

Mask representing a shaman mounting a beaver.

Large mask in an oblong form with a white background which is detached from the rounded face, pigmented in red. The pupils, nostrils and mouth are ornamented. The mouth, decorated with teeth, presents a smile which merges with the bottom part of the face.

Many ornaments, all painted in red, added and attached to the main body of the mask, decorate the overall: two harpoon handles; a pair of hands, including one that is pierced in the middle; a pierced globe; four fish; and two walrus tusks.

The whole is circled with band in fur and two arcs, tied with vegetable fibres.

Very nice state of preservation.
