Frisian Douwe Mattheus Hoogeveen was a student in Utrecht of Elisabeth Hovy and Mauritz van der Valk, both realistic painters. Nevertheless, in addition to realistic still lifes, Hoogeveen also painted many naturalistic-impressionist landscapes and portraits. He also knows abstract work. The painter lived in Haarlem for many years and was a member of Kunst Zij Ons Doel. He was also a member of the Boun fan Fryske Kunstners in Leeuwarden. Because he was a doctor of classical letters, texts or objects from classical antiquity do occur in his still life.On the back of the painting is a seal of merchant authenticity.
The signature can be seen on the left, both the painting and the frame, in extremely good condition.
