Pierre Margry (1818-1894) was an archivist and librarian who scoured the National Archives to highlight the most important French (especially Norman) sailors and explorers of the 17th and 18th centuries. He went through French, English, Dutch, Spanish and Italian sources. He received a knighthood for his merits. He also described the French exploration and colonisation of Canada and North and South America, including the Caribbean.
Condition: half-leather binding, marbled covers and endpapers.
Contains two folding plates: a facsimile of a sketch by Christopher Columbus and a relief print of the Church of St James of Dieppe. Corner of back cover restored. Uncut. Top edge gilt. Spine with 5 raised bands and gilt letter piece.
Note: rare and sought-after because of the many discoveries.
