The paintings by “conceptual painter" Fred Michiels are intuition-based beliefs that can only be discussed in themselves to a limited extent. However certain emotional motives have their own history. Through the use of transparent carriers, Michiels questions his technical ability. And certainly when his works are still nailed "randomly and without a fixed story" on the wall. Their (extra) tactile quality is thus assured in one go. And for Michiels, concept and craftsmanship go hand in hand.
Michiels paints quickly and often by heart. Small inaccuracies therefore show the traces of the genesis process. Not infrequently, these traces are an advantage rather than a disadvantage. "A plea for craftsmanship."
Fred Michiels has been represented by the Antwerp gallery Eva Steynen since 2011 and since 2016 by The Office of Useless Art (Charleroi).
