Kilim, in Persian gilim = loosely woven blanket, is the name of a woven Persian carpet, but also stands for the special manufacturing technique of this carpet. Persian kilims are mostly made by nomads as carpets (without pile) or as bags and tent curtains. The most common Persian kilims are: Soumak, Senneh, Fars and Qashqai kilim.
Kilims are made exclusively of natural materials such as wool, finer kilims sometimes include silk as well. The yarn is dyed with plant-based and mineral colours which contributes to the natural and attractive colour effect. The choice of the material guarantees the durability of the carpets. Because of that, antique and semi-antique kilims can be found even today.
