Provenance: Ex coll. Jean Claude Lauret, coll. Austria.
This stunningly beautiful maternity figure is sitting on an Akan-type stool. Her posture shows her self-confidence. In her arms she is holding two children. These are some of the characteristics of this Baule statue. Residual incrustations bear witness to it being anointed with oil during ritualistic practises. It is covered with a dark satin patina. These statues were made by the Baule in ritualistic settings: The powerful Waka-Sona / powerful statues in wood evoke a seated Ououssou. They are associated with fertility and the protection of children. They are one of a type of statues used by Komian soothsayers as intermediaries, chosen by the spirits, powerful asye usu, to pass on revelations from the beyond. About 60 ethnic groups live in Ivory Coast.
There is a split in one of the children’s arms from stress.
