More information about the artist:
Painter Hendrik Jan Wolter was born on 15 July 1873 in Amsterdam. After terminating his military career, he became a student at the Academy of the Fine Arts in Antwerp from 1895 to 1896. In the following three years, he went to the Institut Supérieur, where he received lodging. His teachers were A. de Vriedt, P. van Havermaet and Fr. van Leemputten. For three years, he received the Royal Subsidy and he also won the Willink van Collen prize. Wolter studied in Antwerp together with i.a. Simon Maris, the son of the well-known Hague painter Willem Maris.
In 1899 he settled in Leusden near Amersfoort and he married Popkolina van Hoorn there in 1904. That same year he also moved to Laren for the first time where he lived around 1915. Between 1925 and 1938 he lived and worked in Amsterdam and Haarlem. In 1924, he returned to Laren. The war and a chronic illness result in a premature end to his creativity. From 1925 to 1938 he was a professor at the Royal Academy in Amsterdam.
In his first period Wolter painted in a realistic style. The influence of the French Impressionists, like Monet and Camille Pisarro, became greater over time.
