Description

A very nice Ko Akae / Famille Verte plate with a boy riding an ox and playing the flute. This scene of a boy riding an ox is often scene on blue and white qianlong pieces, but this is the first time we see it on an early piece like this. Very unusual.

Ox herdboys riding oxen have been used as a motif in painting and graphic arts to symbolize the ability of the mind to control the body. That is, philosophically, symbolizing the ability of intellectual will to rule bodily strength and its physical urges.
