A magnificent beautiful etching

De Haas grew up in Amsterdam and studied there at the State academy for visual arts. He is considered one of the first generation of the Hague School. It is known that he regularly collaborated on paintings by friends such as Willem Roelofs and Paul Gabriel.
De Haas exhibited at the 1855 World's Fair in Paris and regularly also at the 'Exhibitions of Living Masters', including in Amsterdam and The Hague. He was appointed commander of the Order of Leopold and died in 1908, aged 76. His work can be found in, amongst others, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Teylers Museum in Haarlem, the Haags Gemeentemuseum and the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. Also the Alte Pinakothek in Munich and the Nationalgalerie in Berlin have works of De Haas in their collection.
