A mould of silicone rubber is taken of the plaster
sculpture, and it is used after to produce a wax model.
Once touched up, the wax sculpture is coated with
refractive sand all over its inner and outer surface.
The heating and the casting
The coated wax is placed in a kiln at a tempera
ture of 600C
, the wax melts and is drained (hence
“lost-wax”). The result is a “negative image” made of
refractive material and an empty space for the melted
bronze to fill.
The fettling (chiselling) and patination
After the metal is released from its sand (ceramic)-
shell, all the casting marks are removed and the
bronze is finished off. The aim is to get the work to its
