Richard Baseleer (Antwerp 1867 - Genève 1951) was a painter, watercolourist, etcher and lithographer of cityscapes, but especially of marines and river views. Antwerp and the Schelde held an important place in his oeuvre. He was nicknamed 'painter of the Beneden-Schelde'. He received his first training from his father. Later he became a pupil at the academy of Antwerp, under the guidance of Eugeen Yoors and Karel Verlat. Baseleer was a member of the well-known artist associations 'Als Ik Kan' and 'Le Labeur'. He was a founding member of "Eenigen" and of "Kunst van Heden" in 1905. He was awarded numerous awards and honours. In 1899, he resided in Paris, where he shows himself dedicated to Pleinairism and Impressionism. After his return, he settled subsequently in the Kempen, Antwerp and finally in Kalmthout in 1936. He was a teacher at the NHISKA from 1926 until 1936. In addition, Baseleer was a member of the royal academy. Work by him can be found in the museums of Antwerp and Brussels.
