Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945) was a German artist, sculptor, and engraver whose work is amongst the most representative of the 20th century.
She believed art must depict the social conditions of the proletariat. She was involved in the attempt to build a union of workers fighting against national-socialism and in 1932, she was co-signatory of a call for unity of action between the socialists and communists.
With the coming to power of the Nazis in 1933, she had to leave her post at the Prussian Art Academy. Her honour for merit in the field of Arts and Letters was also withdrawn. She was forbidden from exhibiting her work.
This woodcut is typical of her work and shows the detail of the engraved wood. In perfect condition.
