The adoration of the infant by martyrs; above, at centre, the infant Christ levitating, holding a crown and a bunch of roses and lillies; below, to left, male martyrs kneeling, including St. Laurence and to right, female martyrs, kneeling, including St Catherine.

Lettered below image: 'Iesu Corona...quaerentium' and 'Hieronymus Wierx fecit et excud. Cum Gratia et Privilegio Buschere'.

Hieronymus Wierix (printmaker; Flemish; 1553 - 1619)
One of three brothers, all engravers. Child prodigy. Master in Antwerp in 1572, where remained for the rest of his life. Killed a woman when drunk in 1578. The Wierix are important in Flemish print history. The brothers where natural talents in engraving. They began at a very early age and developed a really virtuoso style. Design was a very natural thing for them and there technical is mostly accumulated in small very detailed and well-done prints. Some experts attribute the quick victory of of the burin-engraving in favour towards woodcuts to there combined efforts.
